From the Executive Director

Tincan’s teen programs have been awarded a rare opportunity for self-reflection and capacity-building through a grant from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. The grant provides us with chance to look at our teen media programs and understand how we can improve and expand our offerings both in the variety of after school programs we offer, and also in the number and diversity of our community’s teens that we reach. The Foundation visited our offices last Fall, when we had the chance to describe our ideas and dreams for developing a full teen media program.

Under the two-year grant, we will bring in two nationally known consultants, one specializing in teen social and technological development and the other in film production. The consultants will help us identify the current strengths and weaknesses of our programs, and will give us ideas about where to go from here. Tincan will develop short and long term goals for the teen program, including plans for sustainability. We will also have the chance to pilot some of the new ideas with teens in our community.

What's New In History

The Inland Northwest Memories Project (INMP), an online repository for local and regional history, has been remodeled. The site, which was developed with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, has much improved search capacity, letting users refine their search for oral histories, historical documents and photographs. The Inland Northwest Memories project, which is a contributing member of the Library of Congress Veteran’s History project, has a growing collection of oral histories and digitized memorabilia from the area’s veterans and wartime civilians. The site upgrade will allow us to add more material on neighborhood and ethnic history in the Inland Northwest. Individuals and organizations who would like to provide historical materials to be digitized and put on the site should contact Elisha Durrant at 509-744-0972.

Another new project has begun at INMP in collaboration with the Odyssey Youth Center. Volunteers are gathering the history of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) community in Spokane. Volunteers have been researching information in the files of Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC), and have begun gathering oral histories from members of the community. The project will not only catalog significant events in the history of the GLBT community in the region, but will also shed light on the experience of living as a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender person in the Inland Northwest. Individuals wanting more information about the project should contact Maureen Nickerson - Odyssey Youth Center at 325-3637 or QHP_OYC@yahoo.com

Camps, Camps, Camps

Tincan’s has a full roster of camps for teens this year. A Spring Break camp and seven summer camps promise to get teens using interactive media and computer technology from video production to mapping and making computer games. Camps are open to teens 13-18, and run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m daily for either one or two weeks. Register online at www.tincan.org, or call 215-3451 for more information.

Spring Break Camp

CLAYMATION MANIA
- April 2-6 East Central Community Center

Through Claymation Mania teens will explore creativity and visual story-telling by making their own short claymation movie. Clay animation is a great place to start exploring movie making. Not only is clat simply fun to play with, it also allows for maximum creativity in designing an imaginary world. In the camp, participants will learn the fundamentals of story telling and planning their movie, how to shoot using digital camcorders, and how to edit using iMovie software. We’ll also watch a variety of claymation movies and look at techniques and ideas other people have used.

Cost: $135 A limited number of scholarships may be available.

Donate to Support our Campers

Tincan’s Spring Break and summer camps provide teens with an opportunity to get elbow deep in science and technology in a creative, fun environment. We want teens of every economic level to be able to participate in these camps. Indeed, our target audience has always been low-income and at-risk kids who often cannot afford the cost of our camps. Only $135 supports a teen in a one week camp; $270 supports a teen in a two week camp. Click here and select “Virtual Teen Center”. Any dollar amount is welcome. Help a kid have an enjoyable and educational summer experience.
