by Hannah Whitmore

"Today's podcast is about Pizza!" Stated one resolute young attendee of Tincan's Media Masters session at this year's Expanding Your Horizons conference at SFCC. This yearly conference brings local professionals together in a series of workshops designed to encourage girls' interest in math and science related careers. Over 50 girls from around the Inland Northwest participated in the media masters workshop. They got see how a camera functions like a human eye, forecast the weather in front a green screen, create a podcast, and gear up as a field reporter. Documentary Project Gives Birth to New Perspectives
by Hannah Whitmore

Last spring eight teens in TINCAN's teen programs roamed downtown Spokane looking for "on the street" interviews. They were seeking the public's opinions on teen pregnancy, and found plenty of them. These teens were working on a documentary video that was the idea of a Spokane teen who wanted to take a different approach to the topic of teen pregnancy. She decided to ask the question "Why would a teen choose to get pregnant?" People interviewed on the street responded for the most part with "Choose?! I don't think they ever choose to!" Through these interviews and interviews with local teen parents documentary explored this issue and developed new perspectives on teen pregnancy in general. The project was funded by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, or CIRCLE. The teens will be showing their documentary and sharing what they learned at 7 p.m., November 10th at The Shop on 924 S. Perry Street in Spokane.

by Fred Joslin

TINCAN is now recruiting teachers to participate in next summer’s RSSIT science and technology workshops. After a successful summer teaching GIS and modeling and simulation to area teachers, this National Science Foundation funded project will add game development to its roster of workshops in summer 2007. The workshops help teachers use these technologies in the secondary school science classroom.

Dates for the 2007 workshops are: GIS June 25- 29, Modeling and Simulation July 16- 20, Game Development July 30 - August 3. Teachers can enroll in one or more workshops. Teachers are required to hold a summer camp to practice their newly learned skills – but this year, teachers who cannot hold a summer camp in their own school can participate in a summer camp on each topic in Spokane. Dates for the 2007 camps are: GIS Student camp July 9 – 13, Modeling/Simulation student camp July 23 – 27, Computer gaming student camp August 6 – 10.

WIBIT
by Tara Neumann

WIBIT is off to a great start this year! We are very fortunate to have two great science teachers joining our team. Stephanie Koch is running the 7th grade Soda/eCommerce Club for East Valley Middle School on Wednesdays and Diane Nations is heading up the Centennial Middle School group on Mondays. WIBIT, short for Women in Biotechnology and Information Technology, introduces middle school girls to these topics through hands on activities in after-school clubs. Seventh grade girls make soda pop (a biotech process) and use their scientific journals to create an e-commerce web site about their drink. Eighth grade girls learn forensic science techniques and create a mystery computer game involving those sciences. WIBIT is always looking for dynamic women in science to come and speak to our clubs. To contact us to speak or to recommend someone please contact Tara Neumann: tara@tincan.org, 744- 0972.
