Garland Mural Project
by Hannah Whitmore

The paint was flying and spirits were soaring during a frenzied two weeks this summer in the Garland District. Over twenty teens teamed up with local artists, businesses and community members to paint a mural reflecting the Garland District's history on the Priced Rite Grocery store and Quinn Group buildings at the Corner of Post and Garland. The mural was the final step in a Foundation Northwest funded project of Tincan and the Tinman Gallery. Throughout last school year area teens collected history and put it online via Tincan's Inland Northwest Memories Project website. The historical images and stories were used as inspiration for the mural paintings. Students also produced a documentary about the project.

You can see it and take a virtual tour of the mural by clicking here.

Youth News Comes To Spokane
by Hannah Whitmore

Tincan has partnered with local stations KXLY and KXMN to provide an opportunity for teens to learn directly from professionals and have their voices heard by a larger audience. Last year teens at Rogers high school explored creating news boradcasts in their own, sometimes unconventional way. This fall news production teams from all over Spokane will meet weekly to produce original stories for the air and web. Decked out with new technology provided by a grant from the Communities Connect Program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation they will research, write, and tape stories as they discover and share what they think is important to the Spokane community. Be sure to tune in! Watch for air dates and times on the redesigned VTC website.

Teacher Science and Technology Workshops Recruiting for Summer 2007
by Fred Joslin

Tincan has begun recruiting teachers to participate in next summer’s RSSIT science and technology workshops. After a successful summer teaching GIS and modeling and simulation to area teachers, this National Science Foundation funded project will add game development to its roster of workshops in summer 2007. The workshops focus on the effective use of these technologies in the secondary school science classroom. A new addition to the program will be one week student science camps in Spokane for each technology, so that teachers unable to hold camps at their own schools will be able to practice their new skills over the summer. Tincan will have a booth at the Washington Science Teachers Association meeting October 12-14 in Spokane to provide information on RSSIT and other technology and science education programs.

POLICE CRIME SCENE DO NOT DISTURB:
by Tara Neumann

Muddy footprints trail through the window and glass is shattered all over the floor. A safe is blown open and sits in the middle of the floor. What happened? Who was here? What was in the safe? Eighth grade girls at Centennial Middle School and East Valley Middle School will use science and technology to solve a crime. They will also get to be the storytellers and put the crime together using their knowledge of forensics. Then the girls will take their explorations one step farther and will develop a computer game so that others can play out the crime scene and see if they can figure out who done it. The 7th graders will once again be creating thier own special brands of soda while documenting it all on their ecommerce websites. We will see if someone can top the wacky flavor combinations that they came up with last year!
